Mr. Crowley presently serves as the Chairman and CEO of Amicus. Previously he was founding president and CEO of Orexigen Therapeutics. Preceding Orexigen, Mr. Crowley was senior vice president at Genzyme Therapeutics, a position he assumed after overseeing the sale of Novazyme Pharmaceuticals to Genzyme in September 2001. Mr. Crowley was the founding president and CEO of Novazyme, a company that was developing a novel treatment for Pompe disease. He previously served in several senior management roles with the Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (BMS). Preceding his experience at BMS, Mr. Crowley worked as a business strategy consultant for Marakon Associates. Mr. Crowley began his professional career as a litigation associate in the Health Care Practice Group of the Indianapolis-based law firm of Bingham, Summers, Welsh & Spilman.
Mr. Crowley is involved with several charitable and community organizations, including serving on the Board of Directors of St. Peter's University Health Care System and the national board of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Mr. Crowley's involvement with biotechnology stems from the 1998 diagnosis of two of his children with Pompe disease - a devastating neuromuscular disorder. Mr. Crowley and his family have been featured on the cover of The Wall Street Journal, in Newsweek and on The Today Show, Fox News, CNBC, and The Paula Zahn Show on CNN.
In 2006, Geeta Anand, Pulitzer prize winning writer for The Wall Street Journal, authored a book on Mr. Crowley entitled "The Cure: How a Father Raised $100 Million- and Bucked the Medical Establishment- in a Quest to Save His Children." (www.thecurebook.com). The Crowley family's journey to save their children is the inspiration for the 2010 major motion picture, "Extraordinary Measures", starring Harrison Ford and Brendan Fraser.
Mr. Crowley is also a commissioned officer in the United States Navy Reserve (active), assigned to the U.S. Special Operations Command.
Mr. Crowley earned his B.S. degree in Foreign Service from Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service, his J.D. from the University of Notre Dame Law School and his M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. He and his wife, Aileen reside in Princeton, New Jersey with their three children: John, Jr., Megan and Patrick.
From 1981-2006, Mr. Hayden had a highly-successful 25 year career in pharmaceuticals and related health care businesses with Bristol-Myers Squibb Company. Since March of 2006, Mr. Hayden has held key leadership roles at several venture-stage pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
At Bristol-Myers Squibb, Mr. Hayden served as executive vice president and president, Americas, overseeing two major pharmaceutical units and two healthcare businesses with combined annual sales in excess of $10 billion as well as global pharmaceutical manufacturing. Prior to that, Mr. Hayden held a number of senior management positions including vice president and general manager of Mead Johnson Laboratories; president of Oncology and Immunology; senior vice president for Worldwide Franchise Management and Business Development; president of Intercontinental and senior vice president, Business Development, Pharmaceuticals; president of Worldwide Medicines; executive vice president of Strategy; and executive vice president of the Health Care Group.
Since leaving Bristol-Myers Squibb in early 2006, Mr. Hayden has served as Chairman of Amicus Therapeutics, Transave Inhalation Biotherapeutics, Vitae Pharmaceuticals and Gloucester Pharmaceuticals as well as serving as a Director of Cogentus Pharmaceuticals.
Mr. Hayden received his undergraduate degree from Harvard University and has an M.B.A. from Indiana University.
Dr. Barer has been Chief Executive Officer of Celgene Corporation since May 1, 2006 and Chairman since January 1, 2007. He was appointed President of Celgene in 1993, Chief Operating Officer and Director in 1994 and is a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors. He previously served as Senior Vice President, Science and Technology, and Vice President/ General Manager, Chiral Products, from 1991 to 1994, and the Vice President, Technology, from 1987 to 1991. Dr. Barer is on the Board of Trustees of Rutgers University, Board of Directors of PhRMA, serves on the Board of Trustees of the Biotechnology Council of New Jersey and is on the Board of the Brooklyn College Foundation. He has previously served as a Commissioner of the NJ Commission on Science and Technology. Dr. Barer received a Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from Rutgers University.
Dr. Barkas joined our board of directors in 2004. Dr. Barkas is a Managing Director of Prospect Venture Partners, a venture capital firm. Prior to co-founding Prospect Venture Partners I, II and III, he was a partner at Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers from 1991 to 1997, where he focused on healthcare product company investments. Prior to Kleiner Perkins, Dr. Barkas was a founder and CEO of BioBridge Associates, a health care industry consulting firm. Dr. Barkas is currently Chairman of the Board of Geron Corporation and Tercica, Inc., and serves on the board of directors of Amicus Therapeutics, Inc. and several private life science companies. Dr. Barkas received a Ph.D. in biology from New York University and a B.A. in Biology from Brandeis University, where he currently is Chairman of the University Science Advisory Council and serves on the Board of Trustees.
Dr. Barrett joined our board of directors in August 2009. Dr. Barrett currently serves as General Partner of New Enterprise Associates (NEA) where he specializes in biotechnology and works with members of NEA's healthcare investment group on medical devices, healthcare information systems and healthcare services companies. Prior to joining NEA in 2001, Dr. Barrett served as Founder, Chairman and CEO of Sensors for Medicine and Science (1997 - 2001) where he remains Chairman. Prior to that, he led three NEA-funded companies, serving as Chairman and CEO of Genetic Therapy, Inc. (1987 - 1995), President and CEO of Life Technologies (1985 - 1987), and President and CEO of Bethesda Research Labs (1982 - 1983). He currently serves on the Board of Directors for several life sciences companies including Inhibitex, Inc. (NASDAQ: INHX) and Targacept, Inc. (NASDAQ: TRGT). Dr. Barrett received a Ph.D. in Biochemistry at the University of Tennessee, his MBA from the University of Santa Clara, and a BS in Chemistry from Boston College.
Margaret McGlynn recently retired from Merck & Co., Inc. after more than 26 years of service. Her most recent role was President of Merck Vaccines and Infectious Diseases from 2005 through November 2009. McGlynn joined Merck in 1983 and served in a variety of marketing, sales and managed care roles. McGlynn serves as a member of the Board of Directors for Air Products and Chemicals. She is also a member of the National Industrial Advisory Committee at the University at Buffalo School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and recently served as a member of the Global Alliance for Vaccine Immunization (GAVI) Board and Executive Committee.
McGlynn holds a B.S. in Pharmacy and a MBA in Marketing from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
Mr. Neff has served as a member of the board of directors since 2005. He is a founding partner of Quaker BioVentures, a $280 million Mid-Atlantic life sciences venture capital firm. Mr. Neff is well regarded in the biopharmaceutical industry, is a previous Chairman of the Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, and previous President of the Pennsylvania Biotechnology Association. He sits on the following boards of directors: Amicus Therapeutics, BioRexis Pharmaceuticals, Biolex, Medmark, Regado Biosciences, Resource Capital Corporation, Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, University City Science Center, the Biotechnology Institute, and the Policy Board of WXPN at the University of Pennsylvania. He is also serving as Chairman of the Venture Capital Committee for the Biotechnology Industry Organization's 2005 Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.
Prior to forming Quaker BioVentures, he was President, Chief Operating Officer, and a Director of Neose Technologies, Inc., a publicly traded life sciences company (NASDAQ: NTEC). Previously, Mr. Neff was Senior Vice President, Corporate Development at U.S. Healthcare, Inc., a leading publicly traded health maintenance organization. Mr. Neff was formerly a Managing Director in the investment banking division of Alex. Brown & Sons, and formerly an attorney at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
Mr. Neff is a graduate of Wesleyan University and the University of Michigan Law School.
Mr. Raab has been Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of Ardelyx since March 2009. He previously was a partner at NEA from 2002 and specialized in healthcare investments focusing on biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors. Mr. Raab is also a member of the Healthcare Advisory Board of the Entrepreneurs Foundation and is a member of the Life Sciences Advisory Board for Silicon Valley Bank.
Prior to joining NEA, Mr. Raab spent 15 years in operating roles in the biotech and pharmaceutical industries. He was Senior Vice President, Therapeutics and General Manager of the Renal Division at Genzyme Corporation. Prior to that, he was Vice President of Business Development for the Therapeutics Division, responsible for the identification and in-licensing of multiple new therapeutic products. He gained extensive international operational experience while building a commercial infrastructure in Latin America for the Therapeutics and Surgical Products groups for the company. Mr. Raab was also Product Manager for Ceredase and was instrumental in the worldwide launch of both Ceredase and Cerezyme, Genzyme's $1 billion therapies for Gaucher Disease. He also spent two years with Genzyme's Diagnostic products and services division. Previous to Genzyme, Mr. Raab held sales and marketing positions at Repligen and Bristol-Myers.
Mr. Raab received his B.A. from DePauw University.
Mr. Sblendorio joins the Amicus Board of Directors as the financial expert and will act as Chair of the audit committee. He currently serves as the Chief Financial Officer and Executive Vice President for The Medicines Company. Prior to joining The Medicines Company, Mr. Sblendorio was Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Eyetech Pharmaceuticals, Inc. until it was acquired by OSI Pharmaceuticals, Inc. in November 2005. From July 2000 to February 2002, Mr. Sblendorio served as Senior Vice President of Business Development for The Medicines Company. From 1998 to July 2000, Mr. Sblendorio was the Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of MPM Capital Advisors, LLC, an investment bank specializing in healthcare related transactions. Mr. Sblendorio's pharmaceutical experience also includes 12 years at Hoffmann-LaRoche, Inc., a pharmaceutical company, in a variety of senior financial positions, including Chief Financial Officer of Roche Molecular Systems and Head of Finance-Controller for Amgen/Roche Europe. Mr. Sblendorio is also Chairman of NuLens Ltd., a medical device company that develops and manufactures intra-ocular lenses.
Dr. Topper has served as a member of the board of directors since 2004. He joined Frazier Healthcare in August 2003. He previously served as head of the cardiovascular research and development franchise at Millennium Pharmaceuticals and ran Millennium San Francisco (formerly COR Therapeutics). Prior to the merger of COR and Millennium, Dr. Topper served as the VP of Biology at COR, and was responsible for managing all of its research activities. He has served on the faculties of Stanford Medical School and Harvard Medical School prior to joining COR, where he functioned as a clinician, instructor and basic investigator.
Dr. Topper received his M.D. and Ph.D. (in Biophysics) from Stanford University School of Medicine in 1991 under the auspices of the Medical Scientist Training Program. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease at the Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston and is board certified in both disciplines. After completing a research fellowship in the Vascular Research Division in the department of Pathology at the Brigham and Women's hospital, he joined the faculty of Harvard Medical School from 1997-1998, and subsequently Stanford University as an Assistant Professor of Medicine (Cardiovascular) in July 1998. He has authored over 50 publications, and was the recipient of a Howard Hughes Scholars Award while on the faculty at Stanford University. He continues to hold an appointment as a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at Stanford University and as a Cardiology Consultant to the Palo Alto Veterans Administration Hospital.
Dr. Topper currently serves as an observer on the boards of CoTherix, Inc., and Portola Pharmaceuticals.
